So far, the best thing I’ve seen since the Monet paintings projected on the Rouen Cathedral in France. It had its own style and presence, but this is something beyond.
Scott Thomas of simplescott.com, speaks about directing design for the Obama Campaign.
“Collaboration is incredibly important. Team is incredibly important. And having a fun place to work, surrounded around passionate, driven people is one of the most important things in getting things done, i think.”
Design Video for the High Line. Initially an elevated railway on Manhattan’s West Side, the 1.5 mile long railway underwent a 10 year preservation project beginning in 1999, transforming the disused track into a green space.
Before its opening to the public, Friends of the High Line Co-Founder and President Robert Hammond spoke on the process of preserving and developing the railway.
Logo for the High Line was created by Paula Scher.
A similar project, called Friends of the Bloomingdale Trail is happening right now in the city of Chicago. It was brought to my attention by a pamphlet I noticed on my way out of Goddess and Grocer on Damen. I hope the city is aware of this and can get investors behind the project. Chicago should pick and pull from NYC’s model, first off and most noticeably in the area of website design. Good luck Chicago.

No. Absolutely not. This better not catch on for young, impressionable gentlemen. American Apparel, you’ve gone too far. Slop.
I don’t know where I’m at on this one. There are some sketchy people on Amtrak as well as what seems to be a very loose baggage checking system. Actually, lets just say the system, baggage check and general security, is non-existent. We can just call it the honor system. Who knows how many have traveled with guns in their bags on the several trips I’ve taken. But the fact is that it is illegal and is not encouraged, and I am comfortable with that because that is my same stance for Amtrak. Even if someone does the responsible thing, or what permits them to board the train, and declares they have a gun, unloaded and holstered, it does not mean they are responsible to act in any situation beyond this.
If you’ve ever gone to a gun range, you may know where my concerns lie. In the state of Michigan, all you need to shoot live rounds at a range is a laminated piece of i.d. called a driver’s license. And there you are, after the 2 minute how-to lecture, shooting live rounds in a “controlled” environment with other state licensed drivers firing rounds off next to you. I had no clue what I was doing. My palms were sweaty, it took a second to understand the saftey… yeah, at any second I could have easily misfired, shooting myself or my neighbor next to me. And yes, it would have totally been my fault, not that of the gun. But thats just the point: why am i allowed in there when i have no idea what I’m doing and have a better chance of shooting the person next to me than the paper target 20 ft away.
Its really hard to describe this fiasco. Coyne is either on some serious drugs or has a great imagination. It was great to watch them live and the festival was tight as whole.
A brilliant skit. Colbert puts this guy in a tough spot but he sheds a light on how much we need healthcare reform and how close-minded and backward thinking some conservatives can be.
Nick Bell, a graphic designer, in his article, “The Steamroller of Branding,” splits designers into two camps:
The agents of neutrality
Those graphic designers who see no role for self-expression in design. For them the graphic designer is a passive mediator of the client’s message and is charged with the responsibliity of communicating it with clarity and precision. Unfortunately passive often means mute and can lead to an absence of ‘point of view’. Get very excited by regulating systems such as grids, identity guidelines and manuals. Love following orders. Have a positive view of limitation and are lost without it, which leads them to being dismissed (sometimes unfairly) as ‘jobbing designers’. Theirs tends to be an apolitical stance which makes it easier for them to practice their discipline for all types of client irrespective of sector without too much soul-searching. Contains a large number contingent of neo-Modernists now that Modernism is merely a style. Tend to view content as something that is delivered by others and must not be questioned.
The aesthetes of style
Those graphic designers who are consumed by the formal aspects of design. Tend to practice design for design’s sake and see every project as an opportunity to produce beautiful design. Often guilty of underappreciating the client’s point of view or at least seeing their involvement as problematic. View visual expression (often their own) as the most important ingredient in design. Harbour a point of viewbut one which is often meaningless outside their own profession. Complain of being misunderstood or underappreciated. Some hate to be constrained by grids and identity guidelines whereas others amongst them have embraced it and that is when they turn on the style. Get turned on by Pantone flouro’ colors, spot varnishes and foil blocking. Not known for their awareness of ecological or sustainable production methods. Contains a large number contingent of neo-Modernists now that Modernism is merely a style. Interestingly enough he’s rather on point here.
